Covestro's Baycusan® eco E 1000: a new film former
To address the increasing awareness and concern of end-consumers with regard to the sustainability of beauty products, the cosmetic industry is seeking new solutions with bio-based ingredients to increase the natural ingredients content of their formulations.
Acting as fixative agents, film-forming polymers are must-have ingredients in hairstyling
products, providing both hold and manageability. They are used in a large amounts and are critical ingredients to look at when formulating sustainable hair care products.
New prospects for cosmetics
Most of today’s hair care products are still based on synthetic polymer ingredients. Indeed, the performance of a hair care formulation mostly results from the properties of the film-forming agent it contains, and the choice of hair fixative ingredients that deliver on both sustainability and efficacy is particularly limited. Although expectations may differ depending on the type of product (e.g. products for strong hold styling, straightening, or improving the manageability of curly hair), a modern styling formulation generally needs to provide a strong and flexible hold as well as a pleasant feel. These properties are expected to last for at least
one day, even under high temperature and humidity conditions. Natural ingredients often fall short the styling and sensory performance desired, leading instead to sticky formulations and/or flaking. Partially plant-based Baycusan® eco E 1000 enables a good compromise to be achieved between natural ingredients content and formulation performance.
Some strict labels limit innovators strongly in their choice of raw materials, which often results in low-performing hair styling products with poor sensory characteristics. Since 2016, the ISO 16128 standard has provided a clearer definition of ingredients and encouraged the selection of more natural ingredients for personal care products. Inspired by this standard, which is being adopted more and more frequently by major brands, Covestro has developed a new product line of polyurethane polymers based on more than 50% renewable resources.
As such, these are defined as naturally-derived ingredients. The first film former of this line, Baycusan® eco E 1000, was designed especially for hairstyling applications.
Baycusan® eco E 1000 offers flexible hold, frizz control, heat protection and excellent straightening properties. In addition, this naturally-derived water-based film former gives hair a natural, nontacky feel with no flaking.
