Low-emission catalysts

These days, everyone is talking about reducing emissions – whether in connection with general environmental protection, safety in the workplace or having clean air inside living spaces or passenger compartments. Requirements and methods for measuring emissions, too, are also becoming stricter. With a new series of low-emission catalysts from its partner Momentive, Nordmann is proud to offer innovative solutions for increasingly demanding applications and regulations.

Low-emission polyurethane (PU) materials are used for a variety of applications in the automotive industry as well as residential construction, refrigeration appliances, and others. The catalysts Momentive supplies in its NiaxTM EF series are designed to reduce amine emissions and facilitate the manufacture of end products that are fully compliant with the requirements of standard market testing procedures – including the automotive industry’s VDA-278 test. This evaluation measured a high reduction in VOCs (volatile organic compounds) in systems that featured NiaxTM EF catalysts instead of conventional catalyzing agents, especially linked to amine emissions coming from the catalysts.

Momentive’s NiaxTM EF catalysts reduce emissions in two different ways:

  1. With a special molecular design that prevents large, non-reactive molecules from leaving finished cross-linked polymers.
  2. By integrating into polymer structures through a chemical reaction that results in lower emissions.

Momentive supplies gel and blow catalysts of both types to ensure custom control of the various reactions in polyurethane production. As with conventional catalysts, desired reaction times can be targeted by choosing the right type of catalyst.
